Esteemed Members,
In international relations, transitions are often marked by diplomacy: old alliances shift, new agreements are forged, and occasionally, treaties are quietly left behind. The world moves not only through bold declarations but through the subtle art of knowing when to let go and when to recommit.
This operational year at the Association of Foreign Affairs in Uppsala has been no different. As a board, we’ve carefully navigated the balance between continuity and change. We’ve inherited institutional memory—something we hope will one day grow into a fully fledged alumni network (hint hint)—while re-evaluating our priorities and negotiating, both internally and externally, what kind of association we aspire to be.
“Makeups and Breakups,” as a theme, speaks directly to the core of foreign policy. It reminds us that international affairs are rarely stable; they are shaped by shifting power dynamics, evolving norms, and the human need to adapt in the face of uncertainty. Likewise, our association has made conscious choices, sometimes difficult ones, about what to hold on to and what to leave behind.
Now, as we prepare to pass the torch to the incoming board, we do so with both pride and curiosity. They will inherit a strong foundation, yes—but also the freedom to realign, renegotiate, and redefine our direction. Just as each new administration on the world stage brings with it fresh objectives, so too does each new UF board.
To our members and readers, thank you for engaging with us, challenging us, and reminding us that foreign policy is not just something that happens “out there.” It lives in the conversations we host, the speakers we invite, and the questions we debate.
To the next board, may your term be marked by meaningful alliances, creative diplomacy, the courage to break up with what no longer serves, and the wisdom to make up with that which still holds value.
