Jan Eliasson discusses current global challenges, 80 years of the United Nations, and a life in diplomacy.

In this episode of Radio-UF, we had the honour of hosting Jan Eliasson for a discussion on his life in diplomacy and the challenges facing the world. Eliasson is one of Sweden’s foremost diplomats, with decades of service at the highest levels of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the United Nations.

During the conversation, Eliasson recounts his early career working as a Swedish diplomat at the time of the Cold War and his experiences mediating in global armed conflicts (Iran-Iraq War, Nagorno-Karabakh, and the War in Darfur). Eliasson also reflects upon the role that the United Nations has played in the World since its founding 80 years ago, drawing upon his time as Deputy Secretary General (2012–2016) and President of the General Assembly (2005–2006).

In addition, the interview includes Eliasson’s perspective on the current challenges facing the United Nations, Europe, and the International Rules Based Order – commenting on the peace-efforts in the Ukraine War and Gaza.

We want to extend our sincerest thanks to Mr. Eliasson for taking the time to discuss his fascinating career and for his dedicated service to further global human rights, development and security.

For those interested, we warmly recommend his book ‘Ord och handling: Ett liv i diplomatins tjänst’ (Bonniers Förlag, 2023).
